The goofiest question a Walgreens pharmacy tech ever asked

I was just at the Walgreens im Plantation Florida at 10181 W. Broward BLvd. So I pass by their pharmacy and I see a big sign saying that they have "new" nebulizers for sale. I ask the pharmacy tech there if Walgreens has the replacement filters for a DevilBliss nebulizer. The girl gives us a bit of an odd look and asks " nebulizer, you mean for like breathing treatments?" I was left sratching my head. They have somebody working their pharmacy counter who has to ask for clarification on what a nebulizer is! What other kind of nebulizer is there? What else would you do with one? Sad and scary that employees like this are preparing your prescription order.

Brandi Glanville models Luli Fama Swimwear

By Annamarie Ricci, Miami fashion model, blogger and editor of Tropic Style Magazine

And now for your viewing pleasure, with resort season in the beautiful city of Miami in full swing, I present  Brandi Glanville from the popular reality show, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. She recently did a photoshoot for E! Online which was also featured in US Weekly. The swimwear she is wearing in the following pictures isa fringe coral suit from Luli Fama swimwear: their Rabiosa line.  She looks good, but I think us Miami girls can rock this much better. What do you think, ladies?

Premonitions and spontaneous healing Coral Castle

As I have been telling everybody I have experienced sponteneous healing of asthma. Coral Castle in Honestead islnown for its unique energy. There is supposed to be a vortex on that property. The very one that Ed is believed to have tapped into the move these massive blocks of coral by himself. While visitng I saw a man who told me my lungs would be healed by magnetic forces. As it turns out Ed Leedskalnin himself came to live there with " incurable" tuberculosis. So I find it incredible that he was miraculously healed of a lung disease and so was I. Those of you following my blog know that in January I suffered a Status Asthmaticus that almost killed me. There is no other explanation for the improvement in my health. Have you had a healing experience during or after visiting Coral Castle?

Miami Fashion Model to open Non-profit organization for models

I have reached that point in my life where I really do not want to travel anymore at least for modeling assignments. This last fashion week was a sign onto me that I cannot handle any cold and snow anymore and I would rather not be far from my home and my family. So I am making the decision to semi-retire from modeling. It’s good news for me and it’s good news for the aspiring models of Miami and South Florida. I have been teaching modeling in private settings for quite a while now but now I want to open a modeling workshop- a school to train aspiring models.
I think Miami Beach or Key Biscayne might be the ideal location for such an organization. I am willing to headquarter my organization as far south as the Florida Keys if that’s what it takes to find a suitable property.  Of course, this is a huge endeavor for one person so I am hoping to collaborate with local fashion designers, models, stylists, photographers, retail shops and other businesses who may want to lend their talents or even become sponsors of this unique program.  This is really our chance to do something great for the local fashion community.
We all know that modeling schools can be quite expensive but not all aspiring models come from wealthy families who can afford this training and experience. My organization will be dedicated to mentoring, empowering, training and developing young  models who if they had the necessary funding would have the potential to become successful in the fashion industry.  Fashion is all about uniqueness and diversity. And we are talking about faces and talent that would otherwise never be known.  Therefore I am proposing that my organization be a non-profit so that the underprivileged can have an equal chance to become the privileged. I should think that the Miami fashion bloggers would also want to help spread the word and offer their ideas, as bloggers were once the fashion underdogs as well. We all know that has changed through their determination and they are now past the fabled velvet ropes with the magazine editors, celebrities and fashion critics.  I think everybody with a love of fashion should have that same opportunity.  Anybody wanting to get involved with my proposed program, please contact me, Annamarie Ricci at annamariericci@ymail.com.

The Cracker Barrel in Florida City: avoid it if you have asthma

So I have been making huge progress with my battle with severe asthma but this afternoon despite the monsoon we have going on near the Keys I decided to stop in at what was -I stress was- one of my favorite local eating establishments the Cracker Barrel. They are allowing people to stand just outside their door smoking cigarettes. An old lady blew that smoke in my face triggering a severe asthma attack. With peak flow meter in hand, I could not sit down for lunch and had to make a hasty exit. One of their female clerks was notified of the problem but acted like she did not care. They have ashtrays right up by the door which is a violation of the local ordinances. What good is a smoking ban when you have to walk the gauntlet to get into the front door and the smoke enters the building each time the door is opened.  I will be reporting this to the health department. There is a valid reason why smoking has been banned at public places because it is a serious threat to public health. If they cannot be bothered with my health or anybody else's, then they will now longer be getting my business or my generous tips.

Back from New York Fashion Week

I have arrived back in Miami. It was a long trip. Sooo cold and any amount of snow is too much for me. When I arrived I felt the balmy tropical breezes and I am so glad to be home. Whenever I leave even if it's just for a couple of days, I Fall in love with the magic city all over again. Now it's time for me to rest. Maybe spend time at the beach and afterward I will sort through my pictures to share. Oh and for those of you following my progress with asthma, I am happy to report that I continue to make progress every day and I am mostly symptom free. I was so sick that I did not think I would survive that last attack, let alone begin to get my modeling career back on track and I am also singing now that I can hold a note again. A couple friends and I are trying to put a band together and do some gigs in Miami. I am sure that will be fun.

Michelle Obama Has the right to bare arms

There is an irony in this. First lady, Michelle Obama has the right to bare arms, while her husband wants to take away the citizen's Constitutional right to bear arms. I couldn't resist pointing that out.

Michelle Obama wore in my opinion, a lovely and fashionable choice. However, an inapproprate choice to Tuesday evening's formal State of The Union address. She wore an organza dress in trendy Oxblood and black from Jason Wu's pre-fall 2013 collection. She accessorized the dress with a silver cherry blossom brooch. To many people Mrs. Obama is a fashion icon as many first ladies before her have also been.

Sorry about the spam post

Early this morning, somebody hacked into my blogger account and posted a spam message on my blog. It has been deleted and the incident has been reported to Google. My appologies everybody.

Singers with asthma ?

Hi everybody. If you have been following my posts you know that I suffer from asthma and a few weeks ago I had an attack that almost killed me. I have been singing as a form of excercise to strengthen my lungs. Were it not for the benefits I doubt I would be here right now. I am told that I do have a good voice which encourages me to keep going. Some days my asthma is so bad that I cannot hold a note for really any length of time. Are there any professional singers who have asthma and sinus problems? And if so how do you get around it?

Some PR companies UGH!

Some of the PR companies make me want to scream. They send me list of clients then one person from their office says sure we can send you assortment of samples for review. Then I get another email saying so glad you like our brands but we have no samples for you but we have images. On what website would you publish your reviews? I tell them what would it matter because you told me no samples. How can I review products I haven't tried? I cannot. It is impossible. You want international fashion model and magazine editor's endorsment and publicity but I cannot try your product? I am not going to lie to our readers. This is dishonest. #Sheesh

Follow me, Annamarie Ricci on Twitter

Hey everybody. I just joined Twitter last night. I did have an old account but I lost my password and could never log back in. Not cool. Spread the word though, glamour girls, I am @RicciMiamiModel

I Really Despise, "Hey, You Guys"

Annamariericci.blogspot.com image016[/caption] By Miami fashion model and fashion editor Annamarie Ricci There comes a time in your life when you reach an age of refinement. You’re a bit older and wiser (hopefully) and you have earned the right to be treated as such. I have always been the kind of person who only wants the best. I don’t like ugliness around me. I like to surround myself with beautiful people and beautiful things. Beautiful surroundings inspire me, which is why I love Florida. I only want to be around people who are well dressed and who have good manners and of good moral character. Dirtiness, clutter, disorganization and laziness I just cannot stand. Before this post gets too far off track (I warned you already that I digress…often!)

I went into Barnes and Noble the other day with a male friend of mine. We went over to the video and audio section. There was a male sales associate there who was probably 18- 20. He greeted us with “ How are you guys today?” “Guys?” Oh no he DI’-INT! *Snaps fingers in a Z formation* Yes he did and then it hit me and I hit back. I turned around and I said, “do I look like a guy to you?” This guy, mouth hanging open just looked around nervously. Addressing your customers, especially female as “guys” really is a lazy way. I don’t want to be called a guy. What really got me was right before we walked into that department the same clerk approached a 60 something year old man and addressed him as “sir.” “Hello Sir, can I help you find anything?” To me that is respectful and dignified.

So why does a man get called Sir and we were called “guys?” To me, this is discounting your customers. To their credit, at least Barnes and Noble was not the barren ghost town that I encountered at Ulta Beauty in Pembroke Pines a couple of weeks ago.

Maybe I was raised in the wrong era. I truly think sometimes I was. The term “you guys” is prevalent in pop culture. It began in casual conversation and in my opinion it should stay there. The usage of the term is too casual to address your customers, especially those who are older than the clerk. I do remember this topic came up in my women’s studies class in college and it was clear then that most women were irritated by the term ‘you guys.” I betcha somebody out there will read this post and say “Looks like Annamarie Ricci is a feminist!” Guess again. I think men should be called “sir” or “guys” and the ladies should be addressed properly also in gender specific titles and if you cannot do that, simply omit a title altogether and just say “hello. Welcome to our store. Can I help you today?” I think that I would even prefer hearing the dreaded “ma’am” to “you guys,” or “youse guys.” As they would say it in Chicago-speak.

Now back in the 1950’s, as I have been informed by some folks much older than me, this term was used as a greeting among the white working class-the lower end working class, mind you. From this I gather that from an historical perspective this was a term used to denote the lower class. The thought of this burns me up even more. Was there something about the way we were dressed that gave this clerk the impression that we came from the lower class as compared to the older man who was addressed as “sir?” My friend accompanying me is male and he wasn’t called Sir. That’s really enough to give customers a complex.

I doubt this young man knows the origin of this term because it has established itself (to my chagrin) in modern American language and culture. The term is used so widely and is perceived by the younger people as being hip and cool. Hip and cool young people… the same ones who wear their pants down so low that the crotch falls down to knee level and their boxers are showing. None of them know where that “style” originates either or what it signifies. At the rate our society is deteriorating, when this sales associate reaches an age of refinement himself, I’m sure the next generation of store clerks will be calling their elders much worse than “guys.”

Winter Storm Nemo causes problems at New York Fashion Week

A massive blizzard that has been called historic is impacting fashion week in New York City. Designer Marc Jacobs has postponed his show until February 14th because the storm has caused delays in his clothing and accessories to be sent over for the show. His show was originally scheduled for Monday. This storm has caused flight delays all over the country. There have been winds on the east coast of 75 mph and of course there are massive power outtages. Did I say how much I am missing Miami? I swear I am going to make like the Pope and kiss the ground when I get there. And then I am going on a nice relaxing vacation.

The Ugly side of Ulta Beauty in Pembroke Pines Florida by Miami fashion model and editor Annamarie Ricci

While preparing to go to NY fashion week, I paid a visit to Ulta Beauty 11850 Pines Blvd in Pembroke Pines. I felt the store was quite disorganized and worse while I was greeted by the girls at the cash register NOBODY approached me to ask if I needed help and I did. Us fashion models love to be introduced to the newest products and techniques. I went over to the Bare Minerals counter and then proceeded to help myself to testers of skin care items. This was a big opportunity to come over demonstrate the products and sell them to me. I would have been fired from Revlon if any of us would have ignored a customer. I guess they felt they had better things to do Or maybe the fact that I intentionally came in wearing no makeup so I could shop for these products was assumed to be a lady who never wore any cosmetics. I did not appreciate such snobbish attitudes. So I guess this isnt known as a discounty beauty store for nothing. Next time I will take my au
naturale face and my cash where they will be appreciated.

Miami Fashion model and blogger Annamarie Ricci: Greetings from New York fashion week

Hey everybody. Here I am at the Mercedes Benz fashion week in New York. It's not easy being a fashion model especially since NY is freezing. Big winter storm is hitting the east coast and Ny is currently under a blizzard warning, Not good conditions for someone like me with asthma. I miiss Miami and I miss the beaches and the warmth. The atmosphere is so amazing so many beautiful and creative people all in one place..

Ok. Here is the upcoming schedule of shows: Friday, 2/8/2013 Nicole Miller and Charlotte Ronson Then Sunday, 2/10/2013 will be DKNY. Monday, 2/11/2013 will be the Donna Karan show . Finally Wednesday, 2/13/2013 Nanette Lepore will show her latest collection and after that  if the weather cooperates I will head back home to Miami.

I love you and miss all of you.

A Miami Fashion Model's Perpective of the Miami Market

By Annamarie Ricci Fashion reporting and blogging is my hobby. By day I work as a fashion model, modeling instructor and of course I am considered a socialite. Being a socialite doesn't pay but the perks are great. As I mentioned in a previous post, the major fashion markets in the United States has always been New York City, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago. Miami is known to fashion insiders as a “secondary market” which means that Miami does not have as many fashion designers and magazines based here that hire fashion models as New York City does. Miami is still has a major fashion scene because there is a large market here for models to do print , catalogue and runway work, we have many producers of television commercials also based here. We even have an International Fashion Week sponsored by Mercedes Benz, just like New York does. Basically, even though Miami may not hire as many models as New York, it is still possible for a fashion model to live in the Magic City and earn a substantial income here. I must quickly mention that the United States also has what we call local markets in Dallas Texas, Atlanta, and Nashville. We call them local markets because of their limited modeling opportunities to appear in local store advertisements. Miami was always a fashion capital of the United States. It’s warm climate allows for outdoor photo shoots at any time of the year. It is a particular favorite for swimwear and resort wear companies to shoot their catalogues on our beautiful beaches while most of the country has freezing temperatures and snow. Even though Miami does have the reputation for being all beach wear, so much more is shot here. I would say that within the last 15 years or so, the fashion industry here has increased it’s presence. South Beach’s heyday was indeed during the 1990’s when Gianni Versace was still alive. I can still vividly recall July 15, 1997 when he was fatally shot on the steps of his South Beach mansion. Versace’s lavish shows and parties at Casa Casuarina were legendary. After his murder, things were indeed quiet and frankly rather boring in Miami. But then, we saw fresh faces and new talent arriving in Miami’s fashion scene. Watching our fashion industry recover and flourish again in Miami has been a wonderful thing. Now each of the cities that I have mentioned, has their own look tailored to their market. I learned the trade of fashion modeling from some of the best in the industry like John Casablancas and Sharon Parker who was the Vice President of Elite in Chicago. I pass those lessons on to my own students. Because of the competition in the modeling business, proper training is a must for those who are serious about establishing a career. I prefer to teach one on one rather than a class where I cannot give each aspiring model the individual attention they deserve. I am also very selective about who I accept as a student. There are quite a few coaches , instructors or schools out there who will take almost any young girl simply because it’s profitable. And if you are new to this industry, this is indeed something you need to watch out for. For example, there was a time in Chicago when a young lady might interview with an agency. She is told that she has potential to be signed but she is just not quite up to par but pay us a few thousand dollars to enroll in our training classes and then let’s see…Times have changed . In the state of Florida an agency cannot operate a “school” for fashion modeling because there was too much of this going on. There are a plethora of modeling scams out there and one would think with the global economy what it is, con artists are finding more ways to get money out of people. If you want to learn proper modeling techniques, develop your image and style, learn about proper nutrition and make up application, you would get a lot out of coaching, but I feel that it is deceptive for an agency to recruit aspiring models for their own schools under the premise that they may be signed with that agency after completion and thousands of dollars later. And if you missed a class for whatever reason, you would have to pay extra in addition to the tuition fees that you have already paid, just to make up a class. That to me is pretty shady. When I select my students, they must not only have ambition but they must also have marketability. What I mean by marketability, is that there are certain height, and weight requirements. Height isn’t as much a consideration for print or catalogue work however but it is a must for runway. Let me also point out that just because your mother or your friends think you’re so pretty that you would make a good fashion model, does not mean that industry professionals would agree. I don’t mean this to suggest that your family does not know a beauty when they see one, it’s just that modeling agents have trained eyes and they look for unique facial features. It really is difficult to put into words but I think the general public would be surprised to learn that the most gorgeous girls in the room would be passed over for a girl who you might see on the street and think, she could never model. But she has charisma- a special magic that comes across on film. That is the rare gem that agents look for. Again, it is very difficult for me to put into words and define precisely for you what that special something is. But it is what differentiates a top fashion model from all the other hoards of pretty girls ( or handsome young men) hanging out at the local mall. If I do not think that you have the potential to become a fashion model, I will be honest with you and say so. I refuse to accept money from someone who may want to model, but in all honesty would not have what it takes to become a professional model. I won’t waste my time or yours. Unfortunately, there are many people out there ready to take your money. Lastly, is it possible to work as a fashion model if you are “petite”, that is to say 5’7” and under? You bet it is and in my next article I will be discussing petite and specialty modeling.
